The Explain phase requires the students to begin to articulate their understandings and highlight and describe patterns.

 

Explain also:

  • Highlights and challenges the conceptions of students
  • Involves students working in small groups to promote communication and language use
  • Involves the teacher in probing, questioning and introducing terminology

Cool Stuff

You Need

  • Zip-lock bag
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Yeast
  • 50ml of 3% Hydrogen
    Peroxide Solution
  • Water

 

The Task

  1. In pairs, pour the hydrogen peroxide
    into the zip-lock bag
  2. Top up with 50 ml of water
  3. Close the bag and hold it against
    your forehead, how does it feel?
  4. Re-open the bag and tip the yeast
    into the bag, what do you notice?
  5. Close the bag and place it against
    your forehead again, how does it feel?
  6. What has happened?
 

You Need

  • Zip-lock bag
  • 100ml of Water
  • 1 Teaspoon Epsom Salts

 

The Task

  1. In pairs, pour the water into the zip-lock
    bag
  2. Close the bag and hold it against
    your forehead, how does it feel?
  3. Re-open the bag and tip the Epsom Salts
    into the bag, what do you notice?
  4. Close the bag and place it against
    your forehead again, how does it feel?
  5. What has happened?
